Background of the study:
Cybercrime has emerged as a modern menace, exploiting technological advancements to perpetrate financial and data-related offenses. In Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, the surge in cybercrime coincides with high youth unemployment rates, suggesting a potential relationship between economic disenfranchisement and digital criminality (Ekanem, 2023). Unemployed youths, often lacking viable economic opportunities, may resort to cybercrime as a means of income generation, despite the legal and ethical implications (Udo, 2024). The proliferation of internet access and digital platforms has further facilitated the growth of cybercriminal activities, ranging from fraud and identity theft to sophisticated hacking operations (Ekanem, 2023). Furthermore, the absence of adequate cybersecurity measures and digital literacy exacerbates the vulnerability of both individuals and organizations, creating a fertile ground for cyber offenders (Udo, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the intricate relationship between cybercrime and youth unemployment, exploring the socio-economic and technological factors that contribute to this phenomenon. By understanding these dynamics, the study aims to propose targeted interventions that can mitigate cybercrime while addressing the root causes of youth unemployment (Ekanem, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
The simultaneous rise in cybercrime and youth unemployment in Calabar South has raised serious concerns about the socio-economic wellbeing of the region (Udo, 2024). With high unemployment rates, many youths are reportedly driven towards cybercriminal activities as alternative income sources (Ekanem, 2023). This trend not only jeopardizes the digital security of local businesses and individuals but also undermines the region’s economic development (Udo, 2024). Despite governmental efforts to curb cybercrime, the correlation with unemployment remains inadequately addressed, calling for a focused investigation into the underlying causes and potential remedial measures (Ekanem, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the prevalence of cybercrime in Calabar South.

  2. To investigate the link between youth unemployment and cybercrime.

  3. To propose strategies to reduce cybercrime while addressing youth unemployment.

Research questions:

  1. How prevalent is cybercrime in Calabar South?

  2. What is the relationship between youth unemployment and cybercrime?

  3. What measures can reduce cybercrime and support youth employment?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Cybercrime is significantly linked to high youth unemployment.

  2. Socio-economic deprivation increases the propensity for cybercrime among youths.

  3. Targeted employment programs can reduce cybercrime incidence.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it bridges the gap between cybersecurity and socio-economic development by elucidating the link between cybercrime and youth unemployment. Its findings will provide actionable recommendations for policymakers to implement interventions that foster digital security and create employment opportunities, thereby enhancing the overall socio-economic fabric of Calabar South (Ekanem, 2023; Udo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the relationship between cybercrime and youth unemployment in Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State. It focuses on digital crimes and socio-economic factors affecting the youth.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Cybercrime: Criminal activities conducted through digital platforms and computer networks.

  2. Youth unemployment: The state of joblessness among individuals typically aged between 15 and 35.

  3. Digital literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools and platforms.
